June 6th - tree peony in full bloom

I've never had to stake it in previous years, but my tree peony was a bit battered down by the storms and heavy rains in May, so it's not quite as magnificent as it might be......but those individual blooms are exquisite, and the fragrance intoxicating.  Too bad they really only last a few short days.  I noticed lots of strong new shoots at the back of the plant in the spring, so after the petals fall, I plan to do some judicious pruning to help re-establish the shape and form of the plant.

  1. I would never have guessed that your peony tree was battered. It is showing some magnificent blooms. Enjoy them while you can. They are my favorite flowers

  2. They truly are beautiful - as large as a dinner plate. BUt unfortunately, so fleeting - we had a tremendous storm the day after the photos were taken and there's nothing left! It happens every year - the petals just collapse as soon as any rain hits them!

  3. Hello Donald:
Although we no longer have a garden, gardening, designing gardens and writing gardening books was our life's work - or at least twenty-five years of it!!

We are delighted to have discovered your blog, through Michael's, and have much enjoyed reading, and looking at, this and some previous posts. Peonies are, as it happens, amongst our best loved flowers and we did, once, create an extensive peony walk but of the herbaceous variety.

We shall much look forward to your progress.

  5. Thanks for your kind words, I'm looking forward to taking some time to look at your blog in detail - it looks really interesting. Budapest is on my list of places I'd like to visit, so I can at least do that vicariously through some of your postings in the meantime.
